How to Optimise Your Google Business Profile to Get More Local Customers

Why Google Business Profile matters

When someone searches “tailor near me”, “best sweet shop in Indore” or “AC repair”, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top (the “local pack”) before regular websites. Those spots get many of the calls, direction requests and visits.

A Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business) is free. For local shops, clinics, salons, restaurants, coaching centres and service businesses, it’s often the single most valuable free marketing tool.

How Google ranks local businesses

Google says local results are based on three main factors:

FactorMeaningWhat you can do
RelevanceHow well your profile matches the searchRight categories, complete services and description
DistanceHow far you are from the searcher or the searched locationAccurate address or service area
ProminenceHow well-known and trusted your business isReviews, ratings, photos, website and mentions online

Step-by-step optimisation (12 steps)

1. Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google Maps. If it exists, claim it; if not, create it at business.google.com. Verification is often done by a short video showing your signboard, shop interior and proof of business, or by phone or email. Only verified profiles appear fully.

2. Use your real business name

Don’t add keywords or city names to your business name (e.g. “Sharma Tailors – Best Tailor in Indore”). This breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

3. Choose the right primary category

This is one of the most important ranking factors. Choose the most specific category (“Ladies tailor”, not just “Store”). Add a few relevant secondary categories.

4. Get your address or service area right

Shops should show their exact address with a correct map pin. Service businesses that visit customers (plumbers, electricians, home tutors) can hide their address and set a service area.

5. Keep NAP consistent everywhere

Your Name, Address and Phone number should be exactly the same on your profile, website, Facebook, Instagram, JustDial and other directories.

6. Fill in every section

  • Opening hours, plus special hours for festivals and holidays
  • Phone number (and WhatsApp, if available)
  • Website or a simple landing page
  • Business description (up to 750 characters) explaining what you offer, where, and for whom
  • Services and products, with prices where possible
  • Attributes such as “Women-owned”, “Wheelchair accessible” or “Online appointments”

7. Add real photos and videos regularly

Add your shop front (so people recognise it), interior, team, products and work samples. Upload new photos every month. Avoid stock images.

8. Ask every happy customer for a review

Reviews strongly influence both rankings and customer decisions.

  • Share your review link on WhatsApp after a sale or service
  • Put a QR code for reviews on your counter
  • Ask in person: “If you liked our service, a Google review would really help us”

Don’t buy fake reviews or offer discounts in exchange for reviews. Google’s policies prohibit this, and fake reviews can be removed or your profile penalised.

9. Reply to every review

Thank people for positive reviews by name. For negative reviews, reply calmly, apologise where it’s right, and offer to solve the problem. Future customers read your replies.

10. Post updates weekly

Use Google posts for offers, new products, festival timings and events. Regular activity signals that your business is active.

11. Answer common questions

Add answers to questions customers often ask, like parking, home delivery, payment options or appointment rules, in your description and services, and respond to questions on your profile.

12. Track your results

Check the performance section to see how many people viewed your profile, called you, asked for directions or visited your website. Note which changes bring more calls.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a profile is free.

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

It varies. Changes to categories and information can show results in a few weeks, while reviews and authority build over months.

Can I create a profile without a shop?

Yes. Service-area businesses can hide their address and show the areas they serve. You must still genuinely serve customers in those areas.

How do I get more Google reviews?

Ask every satisfied customer, share your review link on WhatsApp, and display a review QR code. Don’t buy or incentivise reviews.

Why was my profile suspended?

Common reasons include keyword stuffing in the business name, a fake or virtual address, and duplicate listings. Fix the issue and request reinstatement through Google’s support process.
