PMKVY Free Courses: How to Join, Which Courses Exist and Is the Certificate Valid?

What is PMKVY?

PMKVY is the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s main scheme to give young people job-ready skills. The current phase, PMKVY 4.0, focuses on industry-relevant and new-age skills, along with traditional trades.

The scheme covers the full cost of training, so candidates don’t pay a fee. Certification is digital and linked to the Skill India Digital platform, which makes it easier to share with employers.

  • Free uniform and induction kit
  • Accidental insurance for one year during training
  • Residential facilities for certain groups

How to enrol in a PMKVY course

  1. Visit the Skill India Digital Hub (skillindiadigital.gov.in) and register with your mobile number and Aadhaar-based details.
  2. Complete your profile with education, location and interests.
  3. Search for courses under PMKVY, filtering by sector and location.
  4. Choose a training centre near you and apply for the batch.
  5. Visit the centre with your documents for verification. Commonly needed: Aadhaar, educational certificates, bank account details and photographs.
  6. Attend the training regularly. Minimum attendance is usually needed to appear for assessment.
  7. Take the assessment. If you pass, you get a digital certificate.

You can also visit a nearby Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK), Skill India centre or ITI to ask about upcoming PMKVY batches.

Is the PMKVY certificate valid?

Yes. The certificate is government-recognised and issued after an assessment by an authorised Sector Skill Council under NSDC. Courses are aligned to the NSQF, which lets employers understand the level of skill you’ve been trained for.

The honest view: a certificate on its own rarely guarantees a job. Employers look for practical ability. Use the training to build real skills, take the on-the-job training seriously, and add any projects or work samples to your resume.

Tips to get real value from PMKVY

  • Choose a course linked to jobs in your area. Ask the centre about placement records.
  • Visit the centre before you join. Check the equipment, trainers and batch size.
  • Avoid centres that ask for fees for PMKVY courses. Training under the scheme is free.
  • After certification, keep learning through free online courses. See our guide to free and low-cost online courses.
  • If you want to work for yourself, combine the skill with a business plan. For example, a mobile repair course can lead to your own repair shop.
