Is This Job Offer Fake? 10 Red Flags of Recruitment Scams in India

Why job scams are rising

Fraudsters target people who urgently need work: freshers, homemakers looking for work-from-home income, people who’ve been laid off, and those hoping to work abroad. Scams now come through WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, fake job portals and even cloned versions of real company websites.

The losses can be large. Victims often pay small “fees” again and again, or get drawn into “task-based” schemes where they’re asked to invest more money to unlock earnings.

10 red flags of a fake job offer

1. You’re asked to pay money

Registration fees, training fees, security deposits, laptop charges, “refundable” amounts or visa processing fees are the biggest warning sign. Genuine employers pay you; you don’t pay them.

2. An offer without a real interview

An offer after one WhatsApp chat or a short phone call, especially for a well-paid role, is a red flag.

3. Salary that sounds too good

“Earn ₹50,000 a month working 2 hours from home, no experience needed” isn’t how real jobs work.

4. Free email addresses and only WhatsApp or Telegram

Recruiters from real companies usually use an official domain email (name@company.com). Be careful if all communication is through Gmail, Yahoo, WhatsApp or Telegram.

5. Pressure to decide fast

“Only 2 seats left, pay today to confirm” is a classic pressure tactic.

6. Vague job description

No clear role, team, office address or reporting manager. Just “data entry”, “online tasks” or “part-time work”.

7. “Task-based” jobs that pay you first

Scams often start by paying small amounts for liking videos, rating hotels or reviewing products. Then they ask you to “invest” or “deposit” to unlock bigger tasks. You’ll lose that money.

8. Requests for sensitive data too early

Asking for your bank login, OTP, UPI PIN, card details or copies of documents before any formal process is a warning sign. No genuine employer needs your OTP or UPI PIN.

9. Poor-quality offer letter

Spelling mistakes, no company registration details, logos copied badly, or letters signed by someone you can’t find on LinkedIn.

10. Overseas jobs through unregistered agents

For jobs abroad, especially in the Gulf and Southeast Asia, check that the recruiting agent is registered with the Ministry of External Affairs on the eMigrate portal. Fake overseas jobs can lead to people being trapped in exploitative or illegal work.

  2. File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots, payment details (UTR or transaction ID), phone numbers and chat history.
  3. Inform your bank to block cards or UPI if you shared details.
  4. Report the fraud number: you can report suspected fraud calls and messages through the Chakshu facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in).
  5. Report the fake listing to the job portal or social platform where you found it.
  6. Warn others. Share the details, without personal information, with friends and job-seeker groups.

Frequently asked questions

Do genuine companies ever charge for jobs?

No. Genuine employers don’t charge candidates for interviews, training or job confirmation. Treat any payment request as a major red flag.

What is the cyber fraud helpline number in India?

Dial 1930, or report online at cybercrime.gov.in.

How do I check if a recruitment agency is genuine for jobs abroad?

Check that the agency is registered on the Ministry of External Affairs’ eMigrate portal, and verify its licence number.

Is a job offer on WhatsApp real?

Some recruiters do use WhatsApp, but a job offered only on WhatsApp, without an official email, interview and verifiable company, is risky.

I paid a small fee. Can I get my money back?

Report to 1930 and cybercrime.gov.in immediately, and inform your bank. Quick reporting gives the best chance of the money being frozen, but recovery isn’t guaranteed.
